Book 2, Post 1

For my second book, I chose The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World by Wade Davis. It stood out to me the most because I am an International Relations major and find different cultures very fascinating to study, especially when comparing a common question. The book seems to provide insight for different cultures around the world, which is quite refreshing compared to only learning about European history.


I hope that this book will teach me more about the world and the history behind different cultures around the world. I also am curious about the similarities and differences between cultures that I would not expect to have any commonalities with each other. Finally I am especially excited to learn more about Amazonian, Polynesian, and Buddhist cultures because I already have a little background on them and would like to understand more about their history.

  Book 1 Post 2 Throughout my read of How I Killed Pluto and Why it had it Coming , by Mike Brown, I found myself thinking more scientifically and becoming more intrigued by the question – why ? Mike Brown is a brilliant astronomer who thinks critically and objectively about the world – much like a robot – but also has a style of writing that is personal, rational, and humorous – which grounds him as a human. When I started my reading, I was curious about what I would gain from the book, and I am proud to say that I did learn more about Dr. Brown, astronomy, and how life is perceived by different people – namely scientists.  The section of the book that I enjoyed the most, oddly enough, had nothing to do with space.   “Social media is what’s wrong with the world today!” We’ve all heard this statement from our grandparents and we always roll our eyes and dismiss them. But what if they were right? Social media grants people access to easily stay in touch with friends and family, communicate their voices around the world, and share funny cat videos. However, major social media platforms have become hubs for negativity, such as violent or harmful content, to be spread globally. Project Positive Engagement And Creative Expression (or PEACE) hopes to combat negativity in social media by encouraging major companies to promote PEACE over hate.
