World we Dare to Imagine Part 3

“Social media is what’s wrong with the world today!” We’ve all heard this statement from our grandparents and we always roll our eyes and dismiss them. But what if they were right? Social media grants people access to easily stay in touch with friends and family, communicate their voices around the world, and share funny cat videos. However, major social media platforms have become hubs for negativity, such as violent or harmful content, to be spread globally. Project Positive Engagement And Creative Expression (or PEACE) hopes to combat negativity in social media by encouraging major companies to promote PEACE over hate. PEACE would work alongside other major companies, such as news companies and popular influencers to promote content that promotes the positive aspects of the world, such as wholesome videos, scenic views of nature, or updates on how the world is improving.  I am passionate about the PEACE project because people consume so much negativity on a daily basis, b...

World We Imagine Part 1

As an International Relations major, I frequently read about conflict, wars, and corruption. While I read those assigned readings, I often think about how all the negative aspects of the world are often what get the spotlight, even though there is so much good that is not talked about. The same countries that have the highest corruption and crime rates also have some of the most beautiful people with the kindest hearts, but that is never discussed by the media or the readings. The average person has a good heart, but that is not an entertaining story, so it is blocked away by more eye-catching stories, like violence and people having different values.    I believe that the advancements in technology and social media has contributed to some of the negativity produced in the world, but I also believe it has so much potential to show the world how much good there is around us. I have watched so many stories of people helping strangers for nothing more than to brighten someone's d...

Pickleball I have recently picked up playing pickleball with friends and it has been such a fun way to go outside and be active. Pickleball is a sport that lies somewhere between tennis and ping pong, with more of an athletic demand that one would expect. You can either play 1v1 or 2v2 (fair warning: 1v1 matches become tiring very quickly). There are a lot of rules that make pickleball unique (which I won’t go into too much detail about since it is confusing without being able to play the game while learning). One of the game’s odd rules regards The Kitchen: an area in the center of the court that players are not allowed to step in to return hits unless the ball has touched the ground prior. This is one of many odd rules that makes pickleball so much fun because it makes the players have to implement strategies that are different from other sports.  Pickleball is rapidly rising in popularity. While some may see the sport as an alternative to tennis for people who are not as physica...

Book 2, Post 2

For my Book 2 assignment, I chose The Wayfinders by Wade Davis. This book piqued my interest as it took a look into history from a broader perspective than most history classes teach. I wanted the opportunity to learn more about the history of different cultures and civilizations from a broader perspective, and this book offered exactly that. I would not consider myself a history buff, but I do enjoy learning about development and the steps the world has taken to shape itself to what I recognize today. The Wayfinders allows readers to gain this insight from a less traditional pathway and I appreciate this because a majority of my historical understanding has come from one (European) perspective.  When I read the overview of this book, I was excited because Davis’ teaching approach reminded me a lot of a course that I had taken last semester – Comparative Genocide. I completely understand if you read that course title and had a few questions: why does this book remind you of genoc...

AMDP Investment Porposal Rough Draft

To: AMDP Investors From: Anders Marshall Date: March 5, 2024 Subject: IKEA Investment Proposal IKEA is an environmentally and socially friendly company that improves everyone affiliated with it. The Swedish company is headquartered in Delft, Netherlands and has been recognized as the most influential furniture company in the world. It has been positively reviewed by critics and whenever problems do arise (as infrequent as they are), they are swiftly dealt with in a highly socially acceptable manner. This company would be a perfect investment as they are known, loved, and not going anywhere.  Key Terms Triple Bottom Line is a corporal framework that suggests that companies should prioritize the Three P’s when modeling their business: profit, people, and planet. Profit emphasizes making money ethically and ensuring that the company’s profits help the surrounding community: through paying taxes on time and supporting small businesses in the area. People includes everyone connec...

Book 2, Post 1

For my second book, I chose The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World by Wade Davis. It stood out to me the most because I am an International Relations major and find different cultures very fascinating to study, especially when comparing a common question. The book seems to provide insight for different cultures around the world, which is quite refreshing compared to only learning about European history. I hope that this book will teach me more about the world and the history behind different cultures around the world. I also am curious about the similarities and differences between cultures that I would not expect to have any commonalities with each other. Finally I am especially excited to learn more about Amazonian, Polynesian, and Buddhist cultures because I already have a little background on them and would like to understand more about their history.

Some people make meals to survive, others order Uber Eats, but I cook because I love making food and constantly challenging my culinary skills. I enjoy having a finite amount of ingredients and using them to make a delicious meal for my friends, family, and myself.  Do you ever have a craving in your mouth that you absolutely need to have? Maybe an amazing burrito you had last week. Maybe a family dish you haven’t had in years. I have that all the time, and because of that, I often think about different meals I want to prepare, what steps need to be taken, what ingredients I should use, and (of course) how it is going to taste. This process is fun for me because I work out what foods work with each other in my head and plan out what kind of flavor I want to make. Sometimes it is savory, sometimes it is sweet, but regardless of what flavor it is, it always makes my mouth water.  As I mentioned before, I think about what ingredients will go well together and what ingredients won...
